BAHAMIAN RAKE 'N' SCRAPE ENTERTAINMENT - $400 per hour, 3 hour minimum or $1400 for 4 hours
Traditionally, rake 'n' scrape music is used to accompany the Bahamian Quadrille and the Heel and Toe Polka dances. Slaves all over the Western Hemisphere were able to create instruments with whatever was available to them. With these instruments they would mimic sounds that they were accustomed in their homeland. The saw, for instance creates sounds that can be compared to like instruments such as the Nigerian wood block guiro and the cabasa without the nuances in pitch. Not only does it produce the scraping sound that can be done on many other percussion instruments in Latin American, African, Indian, and Caribbean cultures, to name a few, the wobbly sound created by the bending, hitting, and scraping of the saw introduces unexplainable harmonic textures. This is an excellent way to create a wedding with a Bahamian theme.
JUNKANOO RUSH-OUT ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE - $1300 for 15 person band and 30 minute performance
Junkanoo is the quintessential Bahamian celebration, a parade "rush-out" characterized by colourful costumes, goatskin drums, cowbells, horns and a brass section. Junkanoo is one of the few examples of uniquely Bahamian culture. The stunning crepe paper and cardboard costumes of Caribbean Crayola colours are worked on most of the year. When the celebrations are over, most of them - some of them art masterpieces - are thrown away, although the Junkanoo Expo now preserves the best pieces for exhibit. Junkanoo, which has been compared to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Carnival in Rio, teamed with hypnotic music conducive to uninhibited dancing, is a never-to-be-forgotten festival of fun and frivolity. A Junkanoo "rush" is a slow march accompanied by Junkanoo rhythm and percussion instruments, cowbells and whistles. Entertaining your guests with a Junkanoo Rush-Out at your reception will make your island wedding a uniquely Bahamian experience of culture and art. Click here for a full Junkanoo History.
